Gerstenberger said that under Ontario law, if the steel giant didn'rt recall the workers, it would be required to pay severancee to any workers who have been laid off for 35 of 52 The severance would equal one week of pay per every year worked, up to 26. With some 500 workers with 25 years or moreof service, the cost to U.S. Steel would quickly add up toaround $13 Gerstenberger said. The union was told the coke ovenas at the Ontario plant would be restartedethis week, with workers gradually returning. Beyond the roughlhy 200 workers needed for operatingthe ovens, Gerstenbergert said the union did not know what the remainingv 600 or so workers would be doing. U.S.
Steel spokeswoman, Erin DiPietro, said the compant "does not provide updates on operations." She said the compan continued to adjust operations across Nortn America to stay in line withcustomert demand. "We are adjustint our work force as appropriate to matchproductiojn levels," DiPietro said.
